Abstract
Drawing on systems theory and information theory, this essay traces the function of noise on the diegetic and functional planes in one exemplary realist, modernist, and postmodernist text: William Dean Howells's A Hazard of New Fortunes, Jean Toomer's Cane, and Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49.
