Abstract
On the history of psychiatry’s relation to society, as exemplified by eugenics The rise of psychiatry and the rise of eugenics run parallel in the 20th cen- tury. The author of this article holds that this is not mere chance due to an isochronal development in society, but that to a large extent psychiatry and eugenics influence each other’s progress. Her aim is to show why psychia- trists believed in the kind of prophylaxis eugenics offered, and why eugenics relied on psychiatry as a field of activity.
