Abstract

Glucocorticoids – stress hormones released from the adrenal cortex – are known to reduce memory retrieval of previously acquired information in animals and healthy humans. Furthermore, it has been shown that glucocorticoid treatment reduces phobic fear in patients with anxiety disorders – possibly through reducing the retrieval of fear memory. We aimed to investigate the neural correlates of the acute fear-reducing effect of glucocorticoid administration in phobia.
