Abstract

Among the faunal remains from the site of Hummal (El Kowm, Central Syria), a fragmented mandible with the left cheek teeth(premolars and molars without the incisors and the canine) which has the number E6247, was discovered in a yabroudian layer datedby comparison between 350 000 and 250 000 years BP. A morphometric and comparative study allows to assign this specimen to Equushemionus hemippus (Geoffroy, 1855) ; the smallest subspecies of Equus hemionus (Pallas, 1775), which has lived in the Levant till thelast century. This is contemporaneous with the oldest known evidence of this subspecies in the Levant.
