Abstract
Mid-April 1945 forty-nine Swiss citizens from Hungary arrived in Turkey, among them functionaries of the Political Department forced to evacuation, namely Vice Consul Charles Lutz (1859–1975). The latter is credited with having saved more than 62,000 Jews during his service in Budapest from 1942 until this forced sea voyage. Long after severe reproof, in 1958, he was rehabilitated. In 1965 he was awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations.
