Abstract
In the autumn of 2003, the occurrence of harvest mice in the Petite Camargue Alsacienne (Saint-Louis, Haut-Rhin, France) was verified by capturing with life traps. As bycatches, 6 species of other small mammals were found. No small mammals were captured in areas where regular flooding takes place. To examine habitat preferences and activity patterns, captive harvest mice were released and followed in the wild using radio telemetry. The released animals seemed to prefer stands of sedges and reeds. While prospecting the area, male harvest mice tended to cover longer distances than the females. The diurnally changing activity patterns differed between sexes: the females showed more periods of inactivity just after release in the morning than in the afternoon, while the males made less movements in the afternoon.
