Abstract

Based on the Inclusion-Exclusion Model (Schwarz & Bless, 1992) we examined the impact of a career-oriented woman, and thus stereotype inconsistent exemplar, on the general woman stereotype. In an experiment, stereotype-inconsistent exemplar was activated anal conditions were specified that led the exemplar to become either included in or excluded from the category of women in general. We found that the stereotype-inconsistent exemplar reduced the stereotypical. ratings of women in general only in the inclusion condition but not in the exclusion condition. In these conditions, the inclusion versus exclusion was manipulated by specific target questions. In an additional condition where the target question suggested inclusion but the was activated, we observed that the mere activation of the subtype undermines the inclusion of the career woman exemplar and thus stereotype reduction.
